Home (Destroyed and re-constructed)

Sculpture
Toronto, 2007

Description

After visiting London, Berlin, Treviso, and several other European cities, I was struck by the significant architecture that was destroyed and re-constructed after the second world war. It occurred to me that Toronto is a kind of virgin city, with architecture as yet untouched by a period of widespread destruction.

I created an architectural model of the house in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto that I live in. I smashed it with a sledge hammer, and reconstructed it from the ruins to look just as it did before.

Architectural drawings by Emily Hogg, and construction by Emily Hogg, Micheal Bartosic and Diane Borsato.

The work was made in 2007 in Parkdale, Toronto.
